Q: A very important competition is coming up in one week. My team has known about it for months. A parent just informed me that her daughter won’t be there because they’re going out of town. This really messes up our routine as well as team confidence! Is there a way I can stop this from happening in the future?
A: Make sure you have a written set of rules that are distributed to your team at the start of the season. Have both the team member and his/her parent sign the rules. Make sure to include the penalty for breaking each rule. You must be both WILLING and ABLE to enforce each rule. Don’t make a rule you cannot enforce. Had mandatory attendance at scheduled competitions been a rule with an attached enforceable penalty, you would be in a position to enforce the rule at this time. This would discourage the remainder of your team from planning trips during a mandatory event. Please remember that kids are at the mercy of their parents. However, please don’t take out your frustration on the team member as this decision was made by her parents.

Q: Cheerleading is costing SO much! Do you have any fundraising ideas that we could do without involving a ‘fundraising company’? The last company we worked with didn’t deliver on time, and we felt like we worked for nothing.
A: Fundraising companies are often an excellent choice because they have SO much more to offer than in the past. Please don’t boycott ALL of them just because of one bad experience. HOWEVER, there are lots of ways you can raise money simply by involving your team and their parents: Car Washes, Pancake Breakfasts, Spirit buttons (both Football and Cheerleaders), Team poster sales, Dance for parents, Dance for players & cheerleaders, Bingo, Bowl-a-thon, Barbeque Sale, Bake Sales, Pizza Sales (after football practice – sell it by the slice), Poinsettia sale at Christmas, Raffles, Cook book sales (every parent provides their favorite recipe), Garage Sales, Wrapping Christmas Presents, Yard Work Crew, Window Washing Crew, Springtime Window Washing Crew, etc.
